The commission for general microbiology aims at implementing a platform of competence of basic and applied microbiological research in Switzerland, in particular with respect to molecular biology of procaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. Signalling and regulatory networks are emphasized. Furthermore, it aims at optimizing teaching in the field of microbiology by coordinating integrated database network systems.

The understanding of the specific molecular mechanisms of microbes, in particular in the field of cell-cell crosstalk and signal transduction, is necessary in order to optimize their utilization in production and preservation of the environment as well as to develop efficient strategies for the therapy, prevention or eradication of diseases.
